What is one of the if not the safest careers when the country goes in to recession ?
i have been thinking when i come out of the army what to do as a career as there is not many careers that keep you on when the country goes into recession as there is very little or no money around so people cant afford to keep you on, i need something that is gna be a substantial career and not lay me off if the country goes through recession or a credit crunch again, no stupid comments 10 points best answer.

The most recession-proof employees are credit controllers.

Credit control is vital for businesses small and large to monitor cash flow as lending from banks has dried up. Tight control over payments from clients could be the difference between solvency and bankruptcy for many companies.

Auditors and procurement managers; restructuring experts; underwriters and actuaries are the next top four jobs.

All the best, Rob... who is a debt controller in the sub-prime lending industry :)

There is no 'if' about it.
Definitely the unemployment office- they are going to be over-run with claims and are already having trouble keeping up. Check out their website though- the application form is like 10 pages long - only apply if you like paperwork.

Debt collectors, security guards, bus drivers.
You might keep your eye on the construction industry- they will be building power stations shortly.

The only things I can think of are hair dressers and Morticians.

The people that work at the unemployment offices. There have been stories about State unemployment offices having to hire additional personnel to process claims.

Stand-up comedian, when things are at an all time low, everyone wants to go out and have a good laugh to forget all this negative stuff around them , right now there is big demand for GOOD stand-up comics.

If you got the balls, go for it.
Good luck.
