"At-will" employment is generally used throughout the United States, for non-contractual employees. It simply means that the employer may terminate you (often within a given "probation" period of time, such as 90 days) without providing you with any reason or explanation. Also, it provides that you, as the employee, may quit the job at any time, and the employer may not take action against you.

When you sign an employment agreement---usually it's the job application---the "at will" agreement is made (often, prospective employees don't bother reading the fine print, but it's in there).

If you are not hired with a contract you are an at-will employee. Most people are. It basically means that you can leave or be terminated at any time and any severance would be based on company policy not a binding contract.

Employment at-will is the basic rule of employment in the United States. Basically it means that your employer can fire you at any time with no explanation whatsoever as to why you were let go. It also means you can quit at any time. You don't have to work for the company if you don't want to.

It's the law in most of the US, and says that unless you have some kind of contract, you can be fired for any reason or for no reason as long as it's not due to legally protected classes like gender, race, or age over 40. They don't have to give you a reason for firing you, and you have no legal claim against them if they do.

I think that you're referring to "employment at will". It means that you can resign at any time for any reason. Your employer can terminate you at any time for any reason unless it is specifically prohibited by law. For example, they cannot fire you for reasons of race, gender, age, or other protected reasons.
