What is required to be a good manager?

Textbook answer: the fundamental skills needed are technical skills (especially important for first-line managers); interpersonal skills, for when you climb up the management ladder you need to be able to get along with everyone and have good references; conceptual skills, be able to think abstractly, strategically, and view the big picture; diagnostic skills, being able to understand a situation and resolve the issue; communication skills; decision-making skills; and time management skills.
Hope this helps.

IMO a good manager makes their employees WANT to do a good job. You do that by simply following the golden rule. Not the rules set by the company.

Depends on what you are trying to manage. Are you hoping to be one. Our looking for one. If first read book mentioned above. If second find someone who knows about the mini-day.
and likes what they do.

first answer is simple but true.

Forget about being a good manger and work on being a great leader. Managing people has become too much like babysitting. However if you are a great leader you are more likely to have the people under want to work hard for you and the goals you set.

Workers who are being managed tend to build up resentment toward the manager, while people who are being led by a great leader do so willingly and in most cases without the resentment. A great leader sets out the goals and procedural processes then gives the employees the latitude to complete the assigned tasks without looking over their shoulders.

Good Luck

You need to be able to communicate and above all be able to listen.

you must be nice to employees and customers, otherwise you'll be hated. You need the perfect balance of power so they know you're in charge but are happy with their situation. You cannot be demanding, and you must share out all activities with your employees, eg. business trips etc.
