Do some "social engineering" i.e. get some answers over the telephone.
Call the company's human resources department, and ask to verify his employment dates (start and stop dates). Pretend that you are verifying information that he submitted in a job application to your company (make up a company name). Employment verification is standard practice for real companies.

I love how they all seem to say they are free, but the reality is you will pay between $15 and $30 for a background check. This website has a listing for background checks and shows pricing on each one. Hope this helps.
