AP | What is the difference between a 1st and 3rd world country? |

A third world country is a country ravished by poverty and disease. A 1st world counrty is the opposite. |

3rd world originaly refered to having no nuclear capabilities.
This was coined decades ago. Today the meaning has mutated to refer to a country's economic, industrialization, education, and health care situation. These factors are better reflected through the HDI, an index number that ranks countries. The last index I saw ranked Canada #4 and US #10 which is worse. Finland was #1 in the world. |

The term is not used anymore in international relations. It implies 1st world is best and that it is a competition.
The term is 'developed' and 'developing' now.
There is disease and poverty in first world countries as well as third. Also, your notion of developed might be different than my notion of developed. What is better, a country that pollutes and kills for money or a tribe which lives in harmony with its natural surroundings? |

The 1st world refers to the US and its allies during the Cold War. The 2nd world was the USSR and its allies. The 3rd world was everbody else. Not all of the third world is/was poverty-stricken, disease-ridden, etc. |

Third World countries (now known as "developing nations") are countries with a low "Human Development Index." First World countries (like the United States, Japan, and Germany) score much higher on the HDI. A nation's HDI is determined by its literacy rate, poverty rate, life expectancy, etc.
There is indeed a Second World, though the expression isn't exactly parallel to the other terms, and these days, few mention it. According to Nations Online, the phrase refers to "former communist-socialist, industrial states, the territory and sphere of influence of the Union of Soviet Socialists Republic." For example, Romania, Hungary, Latvia, and of course, the big bear -- Mother Russia. China is also considered a Second World nation.
Thanks to the fall of the Soviet Union, the term "Second World" has become rather meaningless. Nowadays, a country's economic strength (not its government) determines how it's classified. Countries in Europe and North America as well as Australia are primarily First World, while Africa and South America are mostly made up of developing nations. Hopefully with economic aid and other support, the gap between the haves and the have-nots will grow smaller, and the need for words to distinguish them will disappear. |

lots of differences I'm from the California and I live temporarily in a 3rd world country now.
the whole look at life is different. things that are valued in a place looks meaningless in the other.
but although I don't like it in the 3rd world. I really have to admit that there are few things better than back in the states. people are simpler, less arrogant, they have good family relations and better faith and respect of religion. |

3rd world countries are those that experience heavy poverty, they are not economically developed, people who live in there do follow premitive ways of life and are hard to be changed to updated world things, the economies depend much on agriculture and as such are less technolohosed. On the other hand 1st world countries are heavily industrialised and highly technologised in nature. their economies depend on factories in producing goods and services. but should we say 1st world economies do exploit the 3rd world economies ??? |
