chrstnwrtr | What is the difference between a successful business that generates lots of revenue and "corporate greed?"? |
For every major successful business out there, someone has to cry out "corporate greed" for some reason.
So is there a fine line between having a successful business and being "greedy?"
Can someone explain? |

I could give you a long winded analysis, but I shall keep it simple and sum up what a successful Business Enterprise has to do:
- satisfy the customer;
- satisfy the investors;
- satisfy the work force and the technical requirements;
- integrate with the environment.
How do we do that?
Constantly updating the Corporate Information process (customer priorities; product/service innovation; human and technical resource updating; market viability); tightrope walking the give and take between what you feed back into the company and what you siphon off to the investors.
Corporate greed? Can crop up in many ways: overpaying executives; short term benefits to investors; ignoring the tenets of a safe and healthy environment and products for the sake of profit; ransacking the long term resources within the enterprise. In brief – short sightedness, poor ethics, a break down in Moral behaviour. You have ample examples in the recent housing crisis, so I’ll stop here. |

This is a good question.
Every business succeeds or fails according to its behavior in the marketplace. But (believe it or not) markets are not perfect, and neither are people.
The bigger the company, the more likely its behavior will have impacts on society or the environment that are not 'charged back' to the company. Economists call these impacts 'externalities'.
As an example, in the 1970s, Chrysler and the other U.S car makers fought hard to prevent the government from passing regulations requiring airbags in cars. Their claim was that they would be too expensive, and that consumers wouldn't want to pay for them. For years, they were successful in their lobbying efforts. For years, the technology could have been deployed, but wasn't. For years, people unnecessarily died in crashes. Then the foreign car makers started including airbags as optional and then standard equipment, and the U.S. car makers 'discovered' that they could include them without impacting profits.
Corporate greed is making decisions that benefit the bottom line (shareholders) with insuffient regard to the impact of those decisions on the larger society.
The new movement toward 'corporate social responsibility' is a recognition of the need for greater awareness of corporate behavior by some progressive companies. Read more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporate_Social_Responsibility
Look at China. Thousands of infants were poisoned by greedy businessmen who added melamine to baby formula to increase profits. We're more advanced, but we're not perfect.
Our economy will continue to evolve. We'll get smarter and less greedy. |

there is a fine line,but greed comes into play when a company do things that harm the company........the best example of this was the company ENRON IN HOUSTON TEXAS.That was corporate greed.What is going on with the companies on wall street.that is greed.people in authority put fake reports,cook the books to show a bigger profit so people will invest ...AIG is greed on wall street.the only people that benefit from it are those few in the boardroom.they have all the inside information and trading ability because they make policy.they even suck millions from their stockholders in the way of bonuses.....did you know when some chief operation officers are hired they get 100k in stock of that company,so when they quit and cash in /trade their shares they can get 5-20 million dollars for selling their shares......the ultimate greed ...a good business model could be like budweiser,coke,pepsi,phillip morris,kraft foods.good companies that are successful and profitable |

The line between a successful business and corporate greed is an very very wide line. The goal of a business is to make a profit. If a business is to survive and expand it must make more profit. Even a company as large as Exxon must continue to grow and expand and make more profit to survive.
So what is corporate greed? It has nothing to do with money and profit. A company that is small can show corporate greed as easily as a large one can. It has to do with the companies mission statement. Most successful companies believe their goal is to help others. For example, my construction company provides restaurants with repairs and maintenance to their facilities so they and their customers can enjoy their meals in a clean, healthy, family friendly environment.
A construction company that exhibits corporate greed would have a goal of do the repairs and maintenance but is we can hide a health problem to save money hide it.
You can see both companies do the same thing but the successful one helps people by providing a service for which they get paid. The corporate greed company wants to make money at others expense. |
