If you are laid off, it means your position was eliminated within the company. This can happen if the firm is restructuring or downsizing. It happens a lot in a bad economy. Say there were ten receptionists at a company, but the company decides they only need six receptionists. The company will lay off four recpetionists.
If you are fired, the company is getting rid of you, not the job. They will hire someone else to do the job you used to do. This usually happens if you are bad at your job or broke company rules. For example, if you were an employee stealing company property, you would be fired. You might also be fired if you are always late for work. |

Getting fired = they don't want you
Laid-off = they don't need you |

Laid off, you might get re-hired, and you're probably eligible for unemployment.
Fired, no unemployment.
Laid off is the better option. |

Fired means you will never be back--Layed off means there is a chance for you to come back. |

Not much difference to the person without a job! But being "fired" implies some failure on the employees part. Being "laid off" is taken to mean the company is not managing its business well. |

fired is due to your actions or inaction's on the job. laid off is because of temporary lack of work or downsizing |

When you are laid off, it's usually temporary. You will be called back when production comes back up, if it does. When you are fired, you have done something very wrong, and they do not want you to be in their employ. |

getting fired usually means you did something wrong and they don't want you anymore. getting laid off means they had to cut back on their employees for some reason or another and they had to "let you go" |

it depends on the honesty of the company. companies that are suffering from lack of business or financial strain will make a public announcement (that could affect their stock values ect) that they will be making cut backs. people who get laid off are often eligible for unemployment or other perks.
when you get fired more often that not the company is stating that you broke a policy or aren't performing to your standard. they are not liable for unemployment benefits. there are infact orders from the top to often "cull the herd" in companies during slow times. this would have managers on a war path of scrutiny so that they can weed out the dead weight without recourse from eeoc and other agencies. |

Getting fired means that you broke a policy of the company, and for that reason you are separated or fired. Being laid off usually happens when there has been a change in business, and there needs to be a reduction in headcount, so you are laid-off at no fault of your own. |

Nothing really unless you work in construction "laid off" can mean that the project they were working is finished and they are temporarily laid off until a new job comes up where as fired means that company will not allow you to work for them again. |

when you are fired companies are usually blaming you for something (like callin in too much, stealing, etc.), but when you are laid off it's usually the company's fault (like down-sizing, restructuring etc) |

When you are fired you can never go back for a job, when you are laid off when the work load increases and they need help you can return to work. |

getting laid off is b/c the comp has to make cuts (for money purposes prob) getting fired is b/c your a bad worker or whatnot. |

Fired: terminated for cause, a bad employee.
Laid-off or furloughed: reduction in work force USUALLY regardless of work record.
Furloughed is where you have a right to come back to work BEFORE they hire new employees in your qualification, and that usually is with a seniority list. |

"Getting Fired" is what happens when you date the boss's daughter and dump her.
"Getting Laid Off" is what happens when there's nothing at work for you to do so they have to 'let you go'. |
