With people leaving corporate jobs in droves to start their own businesses, corporations cutting back on benefits, and the death of companies like Enron, what is your opinion about the future of American corporations? Do you think the "corporation" is alive and well and will continue to thrive, or do you foresee a new kind of business emerging? Do you think people are happier working for a large company, or for a small business? And do you think American corporations are at risk of losing their place in the global business community?

51 of the largest economic entities are corporations.
In the future 69 of the largest economic entities will be corporations.
In the future Wal-Mart will be in 150 countries and they will employ 150,000,000 people (Including the entire population of some African countries)
In the future Microsoft will sell scanners, printers, HDTVs and of course, quadruple play by Comcast (Telephone, Internet, Television and Electric Energy)
Some people will be happier working for small businesses. (College Graduates without Advanced Degrees)
Some people will be happier working for corporation. (College Graduates with Advanced Degrees)
Time Warner would buy Arizona and Microsoft would buy Nevada.
The United Nations would get ambassadors from Global Corporations (Companies with operations in every country in the World) and vote just like a country.
Corporations will police themselves.
If you are a Wal-Mart employee and you are caught stealing then Wal-Mart will arrest you (With their own police force) and they will judge you (In their own private court and if convicted you would be in their own private prisons somewhere in Mexico.
Corporations will force their employees to bank in their own banks, buy their own cars and eat only at their own restaurants or you will be fired.
If you are a Coca-Cola employee and you are caught drinking Pepsi they will fire you.
New Minimum Wage for the United States of America, Canada and Mexico of $2.00 USD per hour.

Does the concept of an American Corporation exist anymore?
Most corporations are currently outsourcing several positions to countries like India, China, etc. The only presence that remains is that they are traded in the american stock market and the majority stakeholders happen to be residents of United States. The jobs that big corporations offer people are getting more and more higher on the pyramid and hence fewer in number. Unless the cost of labor between the u.s worker and an offshore resource reaches some kind of parity, this trend of people pursuing their own business will continue. |

I believe that America's major corporations are going to be just fine. While changes have started in the corporate world with technology, and instant communication, I think the one back slide that we will see is companies putting a halt to this daily. Things like no e-mail days, and doing away with set schedules much like Best Buy. I believe that people will also want a return to a more family valued based working system. It is too much to continue asking employees to cut into this precious time. Personally I left a company myself to work for a small start up, and while the pay may not be as great...the reward is. Each triumph and pitfall we experiance we feel more connected to now. I enjoy this challenge more, and also love the feeling of having the corporate leash removed from me. |

Corporations are alive and well. Many aren't the evil
Some companies cut back on benefits, but then people leave. I left a company a few months ago that cut major benefits at a time when my profession is high in demand. A lot of other people left as well. So now that company is in panic mode, spending all sorts of money to try to get people to meet their commitments. If they weren't so cheap in the first place, they'd be a lot better off. If they don't learn their lesson from all this, they'll go bankrupt.
Business will keep on evolving. New companies will be created, poorly run ones will die. There are many many corporations that have bit the dust
American corporations will have to compete at a global level or fail. Some will and some won't. I don't see many Malaysian companies designing oil refineries in the near future.
The only thing we have to make sure is that competition is fair. If perhaps a Chinese competitor is subsidized heavily by their government, they could lower their price significantly and drive the American company out of business. Once that is done, they can significantly raise prices. |

As a business coach I see that the best trend that corporate america is adopting is a joint venture mentality. With the "Me generation" of the 1980's maturing and realizing there is more to life than trying to be better than the "jones," we have finally developed a better system. Corporate life was to dominate and squeeze out others to get the biggest piece of the pie. Now with numerous niches opening up in all markets, instead of 3 large companies carving up a pie, smaller companies can band together to become a large company or a small company can ally with a large company and have their own pie or make their own "niche" pie.
If you look at the automotive industry, you can see this in practice. Ford motor company does not make all the parts in it's automobiles. It is mainly now an assembler of different parts from different suppliers (some of which are joint ventures).
We are now in a global economy and our success as a country is dependent on working together in joint ventures or partnerships of technology either with internal (United States sources) or foreign sources to mutually benefit. |
