What is the government doing to end the recession?
What is the government doing to end the recession? Thank you (:

We are not in a recession as a recession is defined by 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth. We had positive growth for the first 2 quarters in 2008. We will find out on November 25th about the last quarters growth (or lack thereof)

Sadly...all the wrong things. I thought there was to be oversight on the rescue/bail out money?...
The money that was to be used to extend credit to the people what are paying for the bail out, has yet to be seen. It was a big giant plan to save investors and CEO's----

Technically, we are not in a recession yet. This has to be determined by the National Bureau of Economic Research after we have experienced 2 quarters (180 days) of negative economic growth. In answer to your question, it is really up in the air right now. Recessions, based on the last 11 of them since 1945, tend to last an average of 8 months. Their "endings" do not have a lot to do with the government--more to do with consumer confidence. So, in closing, they will try all sorts of things, but nothing they "do" will actually work. We will just have to wait for the pendulum to swing back.

Not enough, in a nutshell. The problem continues to be that American consumers are experiencing a severe constriction of credit to all but the most qualified of borrowers at a time when the economy is undergoing a significant contraction which is resulting in relatively high unemployment, wage stagnation or wage declines for the remaining workforce, and substantial asset deflation.

Congress is now debating whether to give $25 billion in financial assistance to one or more of the Big 3 American auto makers, and it does not look like there are enough votes in this Congress to pass such legislation. That means that Chrysler and perhaps GM may file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection before the end of the year. If that happens, and if the federal government does not step in to provide the required debtor-in-possession financing that Chrysler or GM or Ford would need to continue operations, then the Chapter 11 re-organization proceedings would be converted to Chapter 7 liquidation proceedings and then all hell would break loose in Michigan and Ohio and other states in the MidWest that are part of the automobile/truck supply chain.

It seems clear that President-Elect Obama will have to pass a significant economic stimulus bill as soon as he takes his oath of office, which will grow in size commensurate to the expanding crisis because apparently nothing will be done by Congress or the Bush administration before January 20, 2009.

After he signs that legislation, President Obama will put the pen he used to sign that legislation up for auction on ebay. If the sale of his signing pen doesn't net the federal government several hundred billion dollars, then President Obama will have to consider legislation to address the foreclosure crisis, to stimulate housing sales, and to compel the reworking of mortgages for homes that are now under water or will soon be under water.

If that doesn't provide the necessary stimulus to get the American economy stabilized, then you can assume that President Obama will seek to revise the US Bankruptcy Code so that beleagured debtors can do in bankruptcy court what their creditors will not agree to do, which is to forgive and/or rework their consumer debt.

Those are some of the things that the Obama adminstration will have to consider doing on January 21, 2009.
