Heh, Fox's show "Family Guy" did an episode about this not too long ago. It was about how they take up lots of energy and drive away small businesses.
I wouldn't worry about electricity since there is enough to go around. But driving away small businesses is true. Such a sad story since the American dream is to own a business, but when you do get it started, some big corporation pushes you away. |

Wal-mart puts mom-and-pop type business' out of business because they can't compete with their low prices. Bottom line.
Some communities offer wal-mart tax breaks or incentives for coming into town, usually for a couple of years. Wal mart employs plenty of people from those towns, and the business' they put under, but often times after the tax breaks expire, they will shut down the store, and the community's screwed. |

In my hometown (which is small and somewhat depressed) the Walmart has become THE place to go for most shopping. The store admittedly creates many jobs and provides a good shopping experience for people in that area.
BUT, many locally owned and operated small businesses simply cannot compete. In a town of 15,000, there's only so much retail that can exist, and Walmart displaces many of the smaller stores that cannot compete on cost or range of products.
It's the nature of business. How many diners have bellied up since the 1970s when fast food restaurants like McDonald's spread across the land. Small stores can only compete against Walmart if they provide some sort of "added value" (i.e., service, specialty products, etc.) that Walmart cannot.
And some people will continue to support the locally owned stores because they are friends and family. |

They put out Small town bussiness that should be there in the first place. They add in more traffic and people that should Not be there in the first place. I just wonder how they are going to find the people that are going to work there in the small town's. There is not enough people that can fill 350 jobs that they say they are going to hire for Wal-mart. Especially in this one small-town that I know this Wal-mart is going in. I just wonder how they are going to pull it off.
The Plus side is if they don't have a Wal-mart close by (closest one maybe 1hr) they don't have to drive so far to get to one. This is the only plus that I can see. |
