Craptacular Wonderment
What is the logic in approving 10 hours a week overtime to 4 employees, instead of hiring 1 more full-timer?
I just don't understand the reasoning to this?
Additional Details
ok.. then consider this...

If they hired a temp person they wouldn't be out any of the expense in benefits, since temps aren't qualified to receive them.. which is exactly this situation. They have hired temps before, then after about a year they made them permanent and approved benefits...which is understandable.

But to delete a position and divide up a persons 40 hours worth of work between the remaining 4 in that division.. is that wise?

Understand that I know cut backs are necessary, and perhaps an adjustment of everyones duties need to shift around to balance work-load, but to apply more stress in an already stressful situation with the addition of 10 overtime hours..is there a better way? Wouldn't using a temp resolve the issue of insuring and benefiting the extra staff person?

If you hire a full-time person, you have to pay that person not only salary, but also benefits. This can include health insurance, dental insurance, workman's comp insurance, vacation, sick leave, etc. It also costs money to recruit a new employee, train that person, and keep them trained. You may have to find an office/desk/cubicle for that person to work at. You have an extra car in the parking lot that needs a parking space. You have one more person that needs to be supervised and kept "in the loop" on things.

Plus, when you create a new position, you often have to justify it to the higher-ups in the organization. It's easier to justify paying overtime, especially if the workload level fluctuates.

None of these are issues if you simply pay your existing workers to work overtime. It is often cheaper and simpler to pay the OT. Plus, many workers actually like the extra money.

---===---

Temps can be just as expensive as overtime, or more. Depending on what industry you are in, temps can be a crap shoot as far as quality and loyalty. Many companies, for a variety of reasons, would prefer to use their own workers when it is feasible to do so.

There are certainly disadvantages with lots of overtime too. When employees are forced to work overtime that they do not want to work for extended periods of time, employee burnout goes up, sick leave usage goes up, attitude toward work goes down. It's a balancing act.

well if you hire a new employee you have the time and expense of the hireing process, the overheads of keeping the employee. Remember the true cost of employing someone is far higher than just their wages. Also you might only want overtime hours to be worked during periods of high demand.

me
having 4 employess work the 10 hours of ot weekly is still cheaper for a co than having to hire 1 additional person. a company usually offer benefits to full time employees which is costly and must be added to the salary costs.

joep199
the logic is simple, if the company pays benefits. The company doesn't have to pay any more benefits for the 4 existing employees, but if they added another full time employee, they would have to pay benefits for that person
