Cc stands for "Carbon Copying", the technique of using carbon paper to produce one or more copies simultaneously with the creation of paper documents. It used to be used on typewriters, by placing carbon paper sheets between two or more sheets of paper in the machine, so that whatever was typed on the front sheet was copied onto the other sheets.
In e-mail, Cc stands for "Courtesy Copy", or just the ol' "Carbon Copy".
Kinda different from what most people think of Cc, it is not meant for sending multiple copies, at least, not particularly. It is a perfectly legitimate practice to populate the "To:" field with several addresses. All Cc recipients will be revealed to all recipients, no matter what. In the other hand, BCc, or Blind Carbon Copy, is available for hidden notification, although the purpose is almost just the same as Cc. |
