What is the purpose of setting aims and objectives in businesses generally?

Remember Alice in Wonderland? Alice asked..."Where does this road leads to"?

The white rabbit said..."If you don't know where you are going, any road will lead you there".

Think about it...after you get there, is that where you want to be? That is why we have goals, aims, objectives and all those fancy words.

I CAN ANSWER THIS, CAN YOU IMAGINE A FOOTBALL MATCH WITH THE GOALS REMOVED ? THERE WOULD BE 22 PEOPLE KICKING A BALL WITH NOTHING TO AIM AT AND NOTHING TO WIN OR GAIN.

silly
so thats what footballs all about doh!!

Aims and objectives are set so that everyone is clear on what the company is wanting to achieve so everyone works towards the same end.

It is wise to have a business plan. Determine what goods or services you want to sell. At how much? At what desired profit?
As you operate the business, make regular checks with the plan to see if things are going as desired. If not, either change the operation or the plan.
It is wise to have a budget so you know how much is coming and how much is going out. If you are not meeting budgeted goals, then use the budget to find out where things are not going according to plan.

Same as aiming of setting purposes.

So you can start seeing and quantifying progress towards them. It's a key part of the planning process.

If you don't have a target, how can you hit it?

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

The purpose of a sporting contest is to win. And what constitutes a WIN is well know and understood by the participants as well as observers.

A businesses purpose is to WIN as well. But what constitues a win for a business is different for each business as well as for any given business over time.

To deal with this aims and objectives are established by the business owners, typically the stockholders via the baord of directors in collaboration with management and employees.

These aims and objectives define the desired outcome for each business in such a way as to determine for all the stakeholders whether the business is succesful. Some of these objectives are very quantifiable and some are not. Some might deal with creating innovative products or services. They can have many descriptions.

The only thing that is key is that the aims and objectives be clear enough so that the stakeholders know when they are achieved.

Then new ones can be established.

This process goes on forever.

To maintain a baseline for success. It allows you to revisit periodically to adjust to your year end goals etc. WRite them down and put in a safeplace then revisit every 3 months. Or, post them for all your staff and revisit them in staff meetings quarterly.
