I think it's great. I live in the Caribbean, and usually the stores here buy products at retail price and resell them at killer prices, since we dont have much options anyway. For example, US$1 is about $2.71 in our currency...and something like a Nokia N95 goes for about $3500 in stores here....I can get delivered here from eBay for about $1900-$2100 tops.
Personally though, I'm not a fan of the bidding process - I rather just buy it now from a store as opposed to an individual seller.

ebay is great, but way too expensive to sell as final value fees have gone up. I personally believe ebay has or will climax shortly, and now specialised auction sites will take over. all their categories of antiques, sporting goods and other can be individual auction sites themselves - and they will be.
No one can make a better ebay as an entity, however specialization will serve as serious competition for them
Also, Ebay does a horible job of controlling the statements of sellers auctions. There is literally no policing when it comes to authentication of items.
