It has its good and bad points. If it is done strictly to lower costs and the management loses direct control over that part of the business, it is bad.
However, here is an example of good outsourcing from a class I'm taking:
A mid-sized manufacturing company (250 employees) is very good at running their manufacturing business but doesn't have a clue about human resources, benefits, and employee relations.
HR Inc. specializes in human resources, benefits, and employee relations. They know the best insurance policies, how to collect premiums, they make sure claims get paid promptly, administer 401k and tuition programs, etc.
In this case, it makes good sense for the manufacturing company to contract with HR Inc to act as a benefits administrator instead of trying to muddle through on their own. HR Inc will be able to provide a much HIGHER level of service because they specialize in this area.
It is quite normal for a company to contract (outsource) with another company to handle duties that are not related to the company's core business.
Simply shoving menial jobs overseas to take advantage of cheap labor is a BAD move though.....and it is starting to backfire as companies realize that the sinking dollar is hurting them and the amount of control over their business that they surrendered to a foreign site is damaging. |

It sucks. Aside from the fact that you nearly always get someone on the phone with such a thick accent that you can hardly understand them! I can see why they do it though, less expensive, and as one of the admins where I work says, five times a day, "What would the shareholders think?" Money is everything to these people, making sure they lose it, and figuring out ways to make more. Luckily, I work in a department that can literally not be outsourced, so it's all good for me. I feel bad for the people that are working in positions that may lose their jobs to those overseas. |

Outsourcing started as a fad...companies normally follow what other companies do and this was first started by GE and with Jack Welch considered the Guru of the current crop of managers all others quickly jumped onto the bandwagon. With all the issues that it has, let's see whether what worked for a true multinational like GE will work for other entities. Also with the US$ losing strength these services are bound to be more expensive going forward. |

Outsourcing is great
You (developed countries) get lower costs, therefore, lower prices
I (developing countries) get employment, economic growth, reducing poverty |

I think it sucks. When I have problems with my Dell PC, I have to deal with someone in India. I can barely understand them. Its sad when ppl here in the states lose their job because the money hungry company wants to save a buck and outsource to a country where you cant understand them. I will never ever buy a Dell computer again. At least I can breathe and know that my job wont ever be outsource since Im in the legal field. |
