What is your opinion on Wal Mart throwing away old food instead of donating it?
Wal Mart dosen't want to donate old food to homeless shelters, or food banks for poor families. Wal Mart instead throws the food away. I think it should be donated. What do you think?

JRavey
It's probably a liability issue. If they donate some old food, they'll get people crying about how they only give away food they can't sell; then if somebody gets sick, they'll sue Wal-Mart (even if they weren't sick from that food).

bones54
If it is not good enough to buy then probably not to eat either, why do you think poor people should eat rotten or aged food?

clvcpoet
They probably found out it cost two cents per store more to donate food than throw it out. Hey, money adds up on a national basis, doesn't it!

Frank Castle
Why don't you go to your local Wal-Mart and talk to the Manager and pick up all the food and donate it to the homeless shelters yourself?

It's a lot of work and you won't get paid but you could go to Heaven.

By the way, if a homeless gets sick with your food he could take your house and ironically you would be homeless yourself.

I suggest you to ask for identification to every homeless person and force them to sign a waiver so they cannot file a lawsuit against you.

We live in strange times.
You now need to hire a lawyer just to donate food.

i agree they should donate it

I have worked in the restaraunt industry. This used to be a viable option. Two things have changed. Our understanding of bacteria and liability. It is simply this. If food is not good enough for the general population, it is a huge liability to give it to the homeless. First person who gets sick is a million dollar lawsuit. It is sad but true.

I think WalMart is running scared is what I think. Plus everything they throw away is used two ways to benefit them more than donating the food to the poor.

They get to take the value of the loss and take it off the top of the income of the business. This can be manipulated extravagantly with a pencil and eraser.
They can take off the cost of disposing of the food. what it cost to get it hauled off and dumped. They can take the cost of loss of profit from the amount of time it sat on the shelf and did not sell.
And they can return it to the seller a lot of times for credit to good product if they say it was delivered in the old state or out of date.

Walmart has not worried or given a minute of thought to the homeless and hungry since Sam Walton passed away. He was the one who made that company into the multimillion dollar world wide corporation it is today. His children and hired management are the ones who never had to earn a dollar in their lives and they are the ones who are only interested in one thing........their pockets
What I mean by running scared is that they are very unpopular in the cities that have no walmart because these places have seen what happens to a small town when they come in and take over.
They lose the town and the walmart grows into a monster super store with no cares of the little guy.
They also can yell that they provide jobs for thousands of people.Well i used to work for these people and you work every day of the week sometimes for only 2 hours and you have 2 days off but they can not be 2 in a row and they pay you minimum wage and require you to do so many different types of jobs you can't even learn one before they shove you into another. Then they call it parttime and give you no benefits. It sucks like a all day sucker does. for a long time.

I think it is good to give food. But they have old food?

I feel they should donate food to Food Pantry's, areas that need help support people in their community that have less than we do. It is a Christian thing to do.

Did you fuss at McDonalds for throwing away old food?

What if it is spoiled? What if the consumer choked? Do you really think that they would open themselves up for the myriad lawsuits that would result because they gave someone some bad garbage?

Get real. Selling the garbage to feed hogs at the various farms contracted is making more food.

i think its crap. dillards and a lot of retail places do the same thing with their merchandise. there are people out there who would LOVE to get this stuff and that really need it. I hate big businesses.

bluedoggy2006
It is a stupid move on the part of Walmart to donate food. They do not get anything out of donating the food or throwing it way, they only get the risk of someone suing Walmart if they eat something bad. In addition, the publicity Walmart will get for donating food won't help them much. They already have a horrible reputation, but millions of customers anyway, so why should they bother.

NO they should not give it to shelters. If it is old they could get samanila or some other disease. Or they could get food poisoning from old food. Gezz.

Health liability issues. Some stores do donate out of date bakery items to such shelters and agencies.

silverwingsstudios
i don't think anyone would want to receive old food. Just an opinion.

I agree with the first answer. What if the food is stale, or bad, some one could get poisoned. They cant take the risk of being sued for helping.
Its like if some one is choking and you try to give them the heimlick...if you mess up, you could be sued, if that person gets hurt or dies.

Lawsuits.

Would you buy food that is old? Oh and you can not sue or take legal action if you get sick/die from it and neither can anyone else.

The one I used to work at donated the opened up dry pet food (opened due to breaking open as stocking, in shipping etc) to the local humane society so they do donate things to some extent (while this one did)

Psalm4:1
Its not that the food is old. Walmart throws away food that is used for free samples only because they do not want their employees to take it home with them. I just had a friend come home from working at walmart and she said they made her throw away ten unopened boxes of cheerios (were still good) and pounds worth of other items. Walmart is a sick company that deserves to not be used. Don't go there!!

bob
I have read all of the Walmart bashing - and it is absolutely opposite to our experience. Through the Feeding America program, Walmart gives us as much as 4,000 pounds per month of first quality meat, produce, bakery and grocery items. That is all we can handle and distribute or there would be more. Not sure where everyone else is getting their information from, but unless it comes from someone at a legitimate food pantry or food bank, it would not be credible. The needy in our county would receive a lot less from us without the Walmart donation.
