What is your opinion on this: My boss whom is the boss over about 20 other employees.?
She is very hard to get along with. She has no life outside of work and no friends outside of work. If you are in good with her (because you kiss her butt) you have nothing to worry about. But if you have any type of issue even if it doesnt involve her she will hold a grudge againest you and make your life miserable. She will do all she can to try to get you unemployeed. My question is...Yesterday we had a baby shower for a coworker after work at the office from her coworkers (a common practice). This employee has had some pay issues etc she has question our supervisor about. Now the supervisor holds a grudge againest her for this. Being that she is the supervisor and should be professional do you think she should have atleast showed her face at the shower or atleast sent a small gift.

But, it seems that it is more and more common to not understand what being professional is. Sounds to me like this boss doesn't understand that with authority, comes close scrutiny, and in order to keep her job in the long run she should learn to put her personal hurts aside. If she can't control her personal feelings, it will eventually hurt her in the workplace. If it was me, I would expect her to at least come in, have a piece of cake and give the employee a card wishing her well with the little one on the way. It could have taken as little as ten minutes for her to do, and would have shown all the office that she can let bygones be bygones. My last boss was like her though, and if I'd known then what I know now! You guys might consider starting a log of all her "inappropriate" behavior towards the ones that don't kiss up to her, because the documentation might save your job some day!

She sounds like a lousy boss (And I’ve had several). But as long as she didn’t interfere with the shower and allowed you to have it, I think you should call it good. Professionalism doesn’t extend to buying gifts for people you don't like, whether you're the CEO or the janitor. A shower is supposed to be a joyous occaision: would you really like someone who has issues with the pregnant woman to attend and put a damper on it for everyone?

A room full of women and a boss as you describe can be a tough situation. And it’s easy to get pulled into the drama, which can be a dangerous thing. Always remember that no matter how difficlt she is, she is first and foremost, your boss. So you really need to watch what you say about her behind her back to your coworkers. I have learned that no matter how close of a friendship coworkers seem to have with each other, they are just that, coworkers. And that said, when push comes to shove, they will all be looking after #1 if the boss gets wind of something said behind her back, senses disrespect from those under her, or if ever their jobs are on the line.

Granted, a boss should be professional and not hold grudges over work related issues. That only makes her unapproachable. But you are also just hearing your coworkers version of what happened when she spoke to the boss about her pay issues. A gift at the shower would have been nice but you did say she isn't a friendly type person, so maybe she thinks this would be inappropriate...or give her the benefit of the doubt... maybe with Christmas and all, she just didn't have time to get one yet. (unlikely but that's thinking positive ;-)

My advice? Do your best to get along with her. Try not to let her personality problems bother you... you don’t have to live with her, so just leave her and her issues at the office when you go home. Let her situation (no friends or life outside of work) make you more grateful that you have a life and friends and family who love you. Concentrate on that instead. And above all, guard your tongue ...

There is a wise saying: Remember that the toes you step on today may be attached to the butt you have to kiss tomorrow!
