well people think they are good beause they sell strong/rich coffee. This is considered good coffee to a lot of coffee drinkers. Also they offer a lot of more fancy pasteries and other drinks. Also all their napkins are made from unbleached, recycled paper. The bleaching proccess for paper releases the msot toxic chemicals during the paper making proccess, by eliminating that step you emlinate a lot of polution. They used to offer free wireless internet access, but they discontinued that and you now have to pay for that.

They also try to make their stores a ritsy, modern, and relaxing setting in hope to attrack upperclass clientel.

However policy wise, they are still a chain and some big CEO is making money off your dollar. Especially if you know anything about the coffee business, where most foreign farmers get paid VERY little for their coffee because of the difference in exchange rates and the fact they just don't know what its really worth over here.
Cetrified Fair Trade Coffee means that the farmer gets paid a fair value for his beans based on what they are worth in America. This lets the farmer actualyl make money off his buisneess and support his family. Certified Fair Trade coffee represents only a very small percentage of their total coffee (about 3.7%).

After oil, coffee is the second-most-actively traded commodity in the world market, yet many of the farmers who grow and depend on the crop for their survival live in poverty. In Ethiopia, 15 million coffee farmers can barely eke out a living, even though coffee constitutes 67 percent of the country's export revenue. Famine has become commonplace, with seven million Ethiopians requiring emergency food aid each year.

Currently, they receive two birr (24 cents) for a kilo of beans.
Could you Imagine paying 24 cents for 2.2 pounds of PREMIUM coffee??

Two billion cups of coffee are consumed daily, and annual retail sales have rocketed from $30 billion in 1990 to $80 billion in 2005.

Basically starbucks big wigs are still ripping off a bunch of people and pocketing the money.

same as any chain - the main thing is that you go into any Starbucks/McDonalds/BK/whatever, and you will get the same thing.

They don't give quality, they give safety. They mitigate the risk of wasting money on something you didn't like by making sure you'll always get coffee that tastes exactly the same.

it isnt.its overpriced and tastes burnt.Tim Hortons rocks all over starbucks.but to answer your question, starbucks just got lucky.they came out at the peak of the "coffee culture"phase we went thru and appealed to everyones elitist attitude by charging outrageous prices.you think people would buy starbucks if it came in a plain styrofoam cup?no way.they buy the logo, not the coffee.LOOK AT ME! IM SO SUCCESSFUL I PAY $3.00 FOR A CUP OF COFFEE!
