Apart from the obvious (doing the work they signed up for), it can be how well they make their manager look good.
I don't mean in a sycophantic way (yuk!), but in the sense that you don't bring problems, you bring solutions. If you encounter a problem in your work, before you talk to your boss (unless it's an emergency!), come up with 2 or 3 ways round it that you could suggest.
Also, it will be someone (in the same vein as the above) who shows willingness to learn, to take initiative and isn't afraid to make mistakes in the process. (A boss who cracks on you for making learning-mistakes is not a good boss!).
