ts | What should I do if I know my personal information is being propagated by a cohort to coworkers and clients? |
I use my work computer for personal use sometimes, as we were told we can. I don't look up anything innapproriate, but I do check my personal email sometimes. I understand the company I work for has the right to monitor employees, but I'm under the impression the guy that is monitoring me is misuing his privleges. I'm currently on a project at a client site and for the past month, fellow coworkers, clients and fellow consultants have been reciting my information back to me in a very demeaning and intimidating manner and it's getting to the point where it is creating a hostile work environment. Remind you, I'm checking my email on my company computer, not the client computer and my coworker is propagating my personal information, not only to people in our company but to clients as well. I really need advice on what I should do. Should I go to HR? I'm a female that works in a male dominated field and I don't want to make waves, but I feel what this guy is doing is unprofessional. |

change your email id and do not use the computer at the work place. Do this for the next six months and check only the importand messages at work. This way yu will frustrate hes efforts and he will stop bothering you.. |

Cover your back - change your e-mail address and don't open it again at work. If this does not stop as a result, then go to HR and tell them your problem and what you have done. |

this is unethical behaivor and if the personal information you refer to is ss numbers, addresses, and the like, it can be prosecuted by law as identity theft in some states, if you can prove beyond any doubt that he is doing it. be very careful here though, because you are getting into very dangerous territory if you make the allegation but can't back it up. what you have to have is real documentation......names, what they told you about yourself, times, places ect. then you go to HR with this information and they can begin a formal investigation of your complaint. simply stating that you "think he is doing this because....." isn't going to hold up in any court, or if it is a union company, in an arbitration hearing. I understand your concerns about the ratio of male to female employees, but this will not be a concern where your HR people are concerned if you can prove it or at least provide them with enough reasonable doubt to start an investigation. they can get the IT department to go into his computer and see exactly what he has been accessing and if the information he has be providing about you to your co-workers is something that shows up on his hard drive, then you have grounds for a harassment complaint and possible prosecution, and at the very least can cost him his job. just be sure when you go to HR that you have a contact there you can trust to get the ball rolling.....if he has contacts in HR, you don't want to go to someone that may alert him to what's going on....something like this is best served up cold, hard and unexpected. there's no way he can go in and delete everthing he has looked up....the IT can people can access it, but just be sure you have a notebook with the dates, times, people and places when and where they recited your information back to you. without proper documentation it's your word against his....with it, you've got him stone cold nailed to the wall. if you have a co-worker or client who can corroborate what you are saying and will be willing to give a statement that's even better......but just make sure the documentation is in place before you go to HR. good luck to you. I don't tolerate behaivor like this in my operation, and you shouldn't either. it doens't matter that you are checking personal e-mails as long as you are allowed to by company policy....what he's doing is unprofessional, unethical, and if you get lucky and live in one of the right states, illegal. |

Here's an idea.. When you're at work....work.
When you're at work, on a work computer, you don't have personal information. You have company information. Don't do personal things at work.. Pretty simple really. . |
