Questioner | What type of business is still out there today that is considered a TRUE monopoly? |
|

There aren't any real monopolies out there except maybe for TicketMaster. But there isn't really a whole lot of competition either. There are probably less than ten "competitors" in each of the following industries: automobile manufacturers, oil companies, cell phone service providers, super markets, major record labels, computer manufacturers, etc. |

Cable TV. In my area, they're a monopoly, but they have competition from satellite services. |

PG&E. If there was competition, prices would skyrocket. The government allows them to keep a monopoly so prices can be regulated. |

if u want one buisness in the world that is the only supplier of one product it doesnt exist. most democratic governments don't think its an efficent method of going about because that means that buisnesses can charge whatever they want. one monopoly where i live is hydro-quebec. its owned by the government but i'm sure there are other electricity companies out there in the world |

Based upon market share, I would consider Microsoft to have a monopoly in the Operating System Software business...even though it is not a true monopoly. Not in the U.S., but in other countries, there are many Telecommunications & Electricity / Gas monopolies. |

Telmex in Mexico (my first choice)
TV Azteca and Televisa in Mexico
CFE (Electricity) in Mexico
Pemex in Mexico
CAPAMA in Mexico
Should I continue? At least this list provides an illustration of the debilitating effects of monopolies on economies. |

An example that does apply as of today (in the UK) is of O2 the mobile phone operator on the iPhone (or I guess the alternative is AT&T in the US but I'm unsure)
I mean if you think about it a monopoly is basically just many buyers and only one seller and this could be due to a lot of reasons - costs being too high, government control, entry barriers, etc. This is just another example. |
