First thing to be dispensed in vending machines were postcards...in london in the year 1880

I believe the Romans had a holy water dispenser, you inserted a coin and got a small amount of holy water, it was basically a drum with a cork and a lever, when the coin landed in the lever, it opened the cork, the coin rolled off, and then closed.
