What went wrong with yahoo?

The last management team didn't have a clue. They just sat around, collected their incredible salaries and enjoyed themselves. Management only cared about themselves. Meanwhile, the company was falling apart. The problems Yahoo! is having today are a result of decisions that were made a few years ago.

Terry Semel was the manager from 2001 to 2007. He earned over 500 million dollars, even though the stock price was only up an average of 5% per year. This is just incredible! Yahoo! could have better spent that money on just about anything else. He wasn't that good of a manager. Here's a link to a Wiki article on Terry Semel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Semel

When a company falls from being number one to being number two, you always have to blame management. (Management also deserves a lot of the credit if the company does great.)

Google scrutinized everything that Yahoo! was doing and basically did it better.

I'm sure the current CEO, Jerry Yang, is a very nice guy. But Yahoo! needs a superstar, like Steve Jobs, to come in and save the company. (I could care less if the CEO is a nice guy. I want someone who can get the most out of business and make it more productive.)

Good question.
