What were some historic examples of companies accused of monopolies?

How about Microsoft - very topical example.

In the past you also had IBM and some of the early electricity generation companies that Thomas Edison setup. I expect you could also use Ford at the birth of the car that was an enormous monopoly for a while. In fact it was so bad that Henry Ford use to employ Private Detectives to spy on his staff while they were in there own homes - he did not like smokers and drinkers and would spy on them to catch them out. Hope this helps.

Standard Oil – is the king of them all. JD Rockefeller (the Simpson’s must have patterned Mr. Burns after him) in about 20 years went from running a vegetable stand in Cleveland to controlling over 3 /4 of the petroleum and oil refining capability in the US.

US Steel

American Telephone & Telegraph

Alcoa

The only two I can think of off hand are Microsoft a few years back, and Standard Oil, way in the past.

AT&T back in the day, and SBC is re-creating the monopoly they once held.

Any electric or natural gas company. The taxpayers/consumers paid for the equipment and now they won't allow others to use it.
