I'm a Petroleum Engineer, and about the closest thing you'll find to an expert on this subject, other than "The Expert," whomever the media says that is next.

There will never be "no oil" in your lifetime. You may not be able to afford it, but they cannot run out.

Now that oil is $70/bbl, it opens the door to production of different grades of oil and different kinds of oil.

America has the biggest "Shale Oil" field in the world, at over a trillion barrels, that has never been tapped because it will be expensive to extract, and the technology has not yet been improved enough to tackle it. But money solves all of these prices, and $100/bbl oil would certainly do it. You will have to be surprised how fast the technology will ramp up when there's a profit to be made.

Another example is the "Coal Oil" sands in Canada that they are already extracting by truck and converting to usable oil. It's slower to extract and convert than to simply produce liquid oil, but the one field they are producing from today is bigger than the Saudi field, which is the biggest in the world. And that isn't the only "Coal Oil" field in Canada, and certainly not the only one in the world.

Most people don't realize that we only produce about 20% of the oil from a producing oil sand, and leave the rest of it there because it was too expensive to produce by secondary or tertiary recovery methods. That is no longer true, so the natural oil reserves just doubled when the price of oil doubled.

Governments are good at creating crisis after crisis, so that they can be your friend and be the only one to solve the problem, that is, by taking control, taking your rights, enacting more laws, forming more committees out of their cousins, and generally living like Kings off of years of perceived crisis. Oh yeah, and they can take over whole countries if they need to and the gullible public is behind them on an invasion, and they can get enough young people to fight their special-interest wars for them.

When I was in college in the 1970's, the known problem of that time was that temperatures were getting "colder." By the year 2030, it would be so cold that plants could not live and man would face extinction without drastically chaging things. That was to be in my lifetime.

But now the "experts" claim "Global Warming." It's all just a theory, like Evolution, but after so many "experts" parrot the "truth" in the media, and even colleges and universities begin teaching it as truth, then it becomes "truth,' even when at best it's a 50-50 shot. Why make a crisis out of something? There's money to be made, control to be taken, and new gov't offices to fill.

Well we wonuld probably go to electric cars. G. bush was in the news the other day talking to car companies to design fuel efficant cars.

nighthawk_842003
Economy will tank because we'll be spending months or years to develop a new form of fuel. Bikes and electric cars will increase in demand by......oh 500%. Everyone will look for scapegoats. Hydrogen fuel cells (with any luck) will be the wave of the future.

Economy is going to crash
Stock Market will take a sharp dive
The business will run inefficently
THe community people have to walk, run, or ride bike.
I think, lol..

Arbitrage
If it was sudden and all of the possible oil in the world just up and disappeared, like an Act of God, then probably mass panic. The economy would grind to a halt since we rely so much on oil-based transportation. The stock market would probably lose half its value. Businesses just wouldn't run much because no one would be able to get to work.

Eventually, we might start producing electric cars and such. We would almost be forced to start building new power plants, even nuclear power plants. This would take time to set up, however. It would probably be the worst economic depression, ever. The Great Depression would look like a little bump in the road.

If it just started disappearing over time, such as over the course of years, then it would be what is exactly happening today. No one would care until we finally started running out.

things will change. it'll be different, but people will get over it and get used to what's new. eventually the old ones will die and the younger ones will be more used to it and the next generation will be completely absorbed by it with no experience with the way things were. so they'll be fine.

Burn wood, walk, collect wild foods, use horses, farm. live near arable land, fresh water, the sea coast. Use paddle watercraft. locate nut bearing trees, store food for winter.
Find groups of like minded people or avoid people altogether if
things realy tank and militias and gangs form. Depends on how fast it happens. First sign is shortages and high prices and wars over remaining oil supplies. Read up on the Hopi Prophecies.
