LANDLINE 0800 AND 0500 numbers are FREE. It's the others you've got to be careful over: They always say that 087X numbers are "charged at National Rate" but does anybody know what this is? - and in case you don't, it's about 9 or 10p per minute. 09XX numbers should be avoided at all costs - and I DO MEAN COSTS! Anything between 10p and £1.50 per minute or part thereof - so if you see on any of those "too easy" TV competition questions that "Calls are charged at £1.50 per minute...." and then, well out of the way "Call normally last for 130 seconds...." that's just 10 seconds over two minutes, so you'll get charged for three, so the actual cost of the call is £4.50! You get more time for that much if you phone Australia!!! |

Cost can be defined two different ways. If you are calling a 800 number then the cost to you is free.
If you want to have a 800 number and have people use it to call you then the cost varies by carrier and area. One example is below and it is $2.00 per month plus $0.15 per minute, plus the cost of a local phone line.
AT&T has a free service but you pay 5.9 cents per minute of calls incoming.
