The post office works on a space available hierarchy. If there is room, all mail goes out immediately. If there isn't enough room, the mail with the highest class goes first.
I've had media mail arrive in 4 days, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, never. |

I work for a charity and we send everything second class post because we couldn't afford first class. |

Its simply a choice which is cheaper but slower. It has its plus points, especially if your sending heavy mail. |

At Christmas it is great - you put 2nd class on your cards and get the same service as those who pay 1st. Royal Mail don't tell the customer but all the mail gets put in together in December because they don't have the time to sift/sort it.. |

It is cheaper and very helpful if you need to send a lot of letters, but don't need them sent quickly.
Such as party invitations. |

It costs less. And they usually get delivered the same time as first anyways - so lots of point for you and me.
Cannot see what's in it for the Post Office though. I guess this is a legacy of when first class mail went by steam train and second by mule or summat. |

Second class gets sorted when first class has been sent on, first class gets more attention, first class priority mail, second class is bulk mail as such of lesser importance!it gets dealt with at times of lesser mail traffic |

I don't know, it's a bit cheaper but there's not really much of a difference at all.
They should get rid of second class and just keep stamps cheap. |

So stuff gets there slower but saves money. Useful for companies etc. |
