When CEO's commit fraud?
When the CEO of a publicly traded company commits a crime that financially benefits their company, who is held responsible, the CEO as an individual or the entire company itself? In the case I’m thinking of the CEO left the company as soon as the accusations were made and hired a lawyer. The stock of the company is trading as if the company itself will be held accountable.

Usually both. The CEO will usually go to prison if found guilty and the corporation will be fined, if found guilty.

It's inevitable that an illegal action by a CEO will have an effect on the company that he's running.
Investors are putting up their money based on faith in a company's ability to perform. This performance is often the result of executive descisions, and if the executive can't be trusted then there is little reason for the investor to invest.

Feeling Mutual
It depends on the situation and the nature of the fraud.

The stock price is based ONLY on what people will buy the stock for.

Moo
Due to some fairly new legislature, CEOs and the CFO can be held responsible when there is accounting fraud (where most of the financial fraud happens)

Sahara
The CEO and the company can be held liable. But CEOs are generally very wealthy individuals so it takes more time to get them. Sometimes they die before they serve time.
