In January 2005, General Mills converted all of its Big G cereals to include at least half a serving of whole grains in each bowl. This essentially added 1.5 billion servings of whole grains to the American diet per year. That equates to 27 million servings per day.
General Mills changed its entire cereal portfolio to whole grains in 2005! They did this in response to corporate research that indicated that Americans wanted a healthier breakfast cereal.

Love the way you put the question. Hey its just the current trend with there being so much of a problem in the US with obesity. I don't think this is a fad, its here to stay, but fear not I suspect all the high sugar, high fat stuff we've come to love will stay around - for those of us not to worried about our weights (yet).
As to when I'd say its been slowly building the last couple years, and I suspect it will keep building fo years to come.
