Banking in the UK started in th 1600s with Goldsmiths who offered safe storage of gold in exchange for a small fee.
Sometimes a customer would give a third person a written authority to collect an amount of gold from the the Goldsmith (e.g. in payment for something). This was in effect the first form of cheque.
Early moneylenders (some of whom were also Goldsmiths) offered the first forms of saving account and were the first to actually pay interest.
