When the World Trade Centre buildings collapsed - was any computer data or other stored data lost forever?
Or were there offsite backups of all their collective data?
Additional Details
If data was lost, then what could be done to prevent this from happening in the future? How can we make important data and the storage and backups of such data impenetrable?

I am sure there was. Not all of the offices used off-site storage, and if they did it may not have been brought up-to-date by the morning of 9-11.

There were safe deposit boxes and vaults in the WTC that contained photographic archives that were lost forever.

yes, data was lost, even if the german compagny hired to recover the data from debris did a fantastic job.

Yes data was lost, but there was some data in a certain file they could reatrieve. It was file 23. It was some reaally important information but they could not get all of it. If you wanted to save that kind of information even through fire. I would say to save all of it on a hard drive and put in a vault.

Big corporations don't keep all their data in one building. There are actual companies who's sole purpose is to take the daily back up data and store it in vaults. I know a couple of them in US.

Knownow't
It was mainly filled with companies which dealt with finance, shares etc and were multi national corporations, so the data would have been backed up off site...although no doubt there was some data lost.....no doubt some lessons were learned if data was lost.
