china manufactures things at the request of the multinational corporations. Big business goes to china and pays them to build a factory to manufacture the stuff and export it to the US.
Many of the products are made in china by an American company using chinese labour.
Do not think that corporate America has your wellfare in mind. No they don't. |

The old economics rationale for international trade is that it allows the consumer to benefit from the particular skills of the people of other countries.
For instance, buying luxury liqueurs, perfume, wine, and fashion goods from France. Scotch from Scotland. Tea from India. Cheese from various European countries. Electronics from Japan. etc.
Unfortunately, it has now expanded to include the ability to take advantage of cheap labor instead of uniquely skilled labor.
I personally do not believe that a company should be allowed to import a product that was produced under conditions that would be illegal in the U.S. That gives companies an incentive to import products so that they can work around being responsible such as meeting environmental laws or labor laws.
Bottom line: Import goods that others make better...not more irresponsibly.

No, I'll continue to buy things that I like at a reasonable price, no matter where they are made. I like my truck made in Tennessee, I like most of my food grown locally, and a lot of my furniture is made in North Carolina -- but I bought it because I liked it.
The pet food incident was extremely unfortunate, but people forget that things like this have happened before, and for American products as well as foreign.
If you're worried about being jobless, educate yourself, work hard, and make yourself worth more money. It's that simple. If enough people did that, we'd be exporting more goods and services. As it is, we already export a great deal, it's just that we import more... |
