When you can make ice cubes in hell.
First edit--It kills me to say this, but some of what "knowitAl" says is true. And it just amplifies our notion of the "greed is good", "screw you, I got mine" philosophy that is so prevalent today! Big Oil executives can rest easy in this world, knowing that our pathetic excuse for a government is completely impotent when it comes to doing anything about it! Our insatiable thirst for oil, and the administration's refusal to fund money to viable and alternative sources of energy simply encourages these cold, bloodless, soulless executives to keep chomping away at their profits, and then kicking the dog under the table when he is begging for a small piece of it. In a world where that kind of activity continues to be okay, "we get what we deserve"! |

Listen, you're probably a nice guy, and not stupid, but you really need to learn more about how investing and markets work, then you will see that Exxon deserves its money, and they do share it, they share it with anybody who wants.
Six or seven years ago, when gas prices were cheap, Exxon invested a lot of money in buying gas. If you thought that was a good idea, you should have invested in gas too. Then if the price went down, you would have lost money, and so would they. It's called taking a risk.
And when gas prices dropped from 1982 to 1990 and then again till 98 or so (ok, they stayed the same, but that's dropping when there is inflation) were you running around and saying that Exxon was being gouged? no. It's called taking a risk.
So, the gas that Exxon bought 10 years ago and 20 years ago, now it has a new price. Do you sell your stuff for less than it is worth? Can I buy your ipod please, and quit trying to gouge me by charging what it's worth, I want it cheap! cheap! cheap! don't be a hypocrite.
Anyway, Exxon is a public company, it is owned by shareholders who all share in the profits. If you want to share in Exxon's profits, just buy some Exxon stock, and you will be treated equally with Bill Gates, and the old lady down the street with her pension.
So, it's just like you say: they need to remember who helps them make profits, and they do, they remember their shareholders. Do you know the story of the Ant and the Grasshopper, where the Ant (Exxon) works hard all summer saving food for winter, and the Grasshopper (you) doesn't and then starts whining and complaining when winter comes and he wants what the Ant has? |
