Hey there. The 1st wal-mart location was opened in Rogers, Arkansas about 40 years ago. Sam Walton (wal-ton, wal-mart) thought that it would be nice for the local townsfolk to be able to buy a LARGE selection of items at one store, HIS store. And it worked out so well for him that he started to expand...and expand...and expand... and you get the idea.
Wal-mart has gotten a lot of criticism for not paying workers benefits and the low wages that they pay. But they do create a lot of jobs... |

SCREW WAL-MART! JUST BECAUSE THEY GENERATE JOBS DOESNT MEAN THEY ARE AUTOMATICALLY GOOD. THEY DON'T PAY OVERTIME, BUT MAKE YOU WORK IT. THEY PAY ON AVERAGE 30-40% LESS THAN OTHER COMPANIES. THEY LUMP TOO MANY TASKS INTO ONE JOB. THEY GENERALLY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR WELL BEING ONLY HOW THIER PROFITS LOOK.
I used to work for Sam's as a night merchendiser. I made about $10 p/h. At first all I had to do was stock, merchendise, and clean up (sweeping aisle, behind pallets). As it went along they made me start driving a fork lift, and when you drive a fork lift you are then expected to stack and put up all incoming merchendise. With the amount of goods that come in nightly you can spend anywhere from 1-3 hours alone stacking and putting away merchendise. This puts great pressure on you to continue stocking the same amounts but faster, and that sh*t is heavy. They only allowed us to work 40 hours a week, but they still made us work 10-12 hour days and cut out hours at the end of the week when the counter runs back to zero. Although, you still had the same work load as you did the nights that you had to work 10 hours. Now you do the math and see if that seems like fun to you.
At christmas time they decided that we don't need christmas night off, and we didn't want to see our families. They told us that on Christmas night we had the CHOICE of coming in at 10pm or at 3am the next day. The years before they would make everyone work a little extra to get the store ready for New Years Christmas Eve night. That was not that bad, but they decided that we should have no say in how that works out and just TOLD everyone we had a bullsh*t choice. I said "f*ck you" I am NOT working on Christmas; I want to see my family. The managers had a f*cking fit. Anyway long story short, I quit and I never looked back. I will (on principal) never support Wal-Mart stores again, and I wish thier company horrible luck. The kind where some pissed off employee organizes many others and blows up thier stores, buildings, trucks, executives, and that stupid f*ck of a recieving manager Jim "the homo marine" at store 6453.
