Which are the Safest American Banks??
As we are witnessing how fragile the American banks are right now, does anyone know which banks are the safest? I figured the large ones are safe, like BofA, Wamu, & Wells....but is that really the case? I'm not a business guru, so I don't know. Someone please share your knowledge.

Big and Big trouble about US economic.

People cannot find safest bank . Shown no confident in economic system.

Basic logic of bank business is
- borrow from people
- lending money to debtor
* Bank have to reserve for loan portfolio only 10% +/-

Therefor, if people not confident in bank system and need to withdraw in same time ...This is Crash..and RAW

Gov have to seriously support for recall confident (I don't see / They concern outside)

What next.....

- Bank need cash for depositor
- They have to recall debt from debtor (Short Term Loan)
- No New Loan

Be careful
----SME / Corporate / no money for operating business

What next ...............

I ever pass the same events(1997 Tom Yum Kung Crisis of Thailand - This time only begin of crash and crisis of Thailand)

I have to go I will wrote what next full in my blog http://debt-restructuring.blogspot.com/ in 3 hours

Oh sorry, my answer

no safest in this time if gov don't guarantee

Safest maybe by diversify to your home or other investment(Gold/Community/Gov Bond)

You must find the answer yourself, as there are many different criteria and you ae the only safe holder for your future. This isn't a facicious putdown of your question, but the true answer. The beleif that the bigger the bank the better that bank is false. Example, a small local bank with many assets such as crop loans, farm loans, in an era of high commidity prices should be fairly stable, while as a general rule larger banks, interstate banks, will invest in and hold home mortgages and business loans as assets, and, when the cycle of home values retract and business stagnates they also lose. My beleif is that small farmers and merchant banks would be safer. However, for long range savings buy gold and silver, not bullion, but minted coin as it is far more convertable, and, when you buy, be sure to insist on intrinsic value only as the standard, not high priced so called special editions. You're saving for the future, not speculating, not gambling. The only way to protect yourself is with knowledge, it doesn't take long at all to study and learn how the system works.

If you have less than $100,000 ($200,000 in joint accounts) your deposits are protected by the FDIC, so it really doesn't matter much (to you) whether the bank is well capitalized or not. This does create a moral hazard for investors, but that is what the FDIC does. for example Indymac bank was closed last Friday and reopened as a new bank on Monday.Insured depositors didn;t lose a cent and business continues.

I'd say your pockets or swiss banks, but try BofA

loool, dont worry your savings will be safe probably, whatever happens but here is my advice.

If it is just for a current account it doesnt matter but for savings or mortgages yep, go to the biggest one. look online, see which's share price has fallen the LEAST, and go with that one.
