The fact is that Kmart, Walmart and Target all started in the same year: 1962. So no one has "been around longer" than the other.
Walmart is trying to upgrade its image since Target began aggressive expansion a couple of years ago, and Walmart is at least cleaning up its stores in towns where it has Target competition.
Small town Walmarts (who have no competition from upscaled Target) still remain dirty, dumpy and generally in poor condition. The undisputed belief that Walmart has the lowest prices in town draws in a lot of clientelle who simply can't afford to go anywhere else. Therefore the dumpy stores are also inhabited by low-income shoppers. The very long lines at the checkouts (about which the company has done nothing) just adds to the disgusting shopping experience.
Most people I know only shop there because they can't afford to go anywhere else. Those who can afford to shop elsewhere are happy that they can do so.
Target is the store of choice for those who would rather pay a little more than put up with the generally poor service and bad atmosphere at many Walmart stores. Since the transportation costs have climed due to gas prices, there isn't any difference in prices on the identical items at Target or Walmart. Walmart carries a much larger assortment of cheap products; Target carries a larger assortment of upscale & higher priced products.
So the choice usually is determined by who has the money and who has to scrimp to get by. Therefore you generally see more upwardly mobile shoppers at Target and more food stamp shoppers in flip flops and screaming kids at Walmart. At least that's been my experience in the several towns we've lived. |

I love both stores and I have always been a HUGE wal-mart fan but, recently I've been shopping at Target more. The Wal-marts near my home, though open 24 hours and very convenient, are dirty and I hate to say it, but many bums and homeless people like to stay inside. Target is a bit more upscale, there is a better selection of products, I love Archer Farms, and I don't feel uncomfortable within the store. |

Super Target, it's much cleaner than wal-mart. Also Target doesn't crowd the isles with stuff so you can't comfortably walk around. |

Target. The stores are cleaner and more attractive, the employees are friendlier and more helpful, plus Target doesn't play music on the PA system, and makes announcements very sparingly. |

Target. Wal-Mart is the devil (don't get me started about how every last thing in there is from China, how the employees are treated like crap, and the stingy Waltons). Plus, Wal-mart is always dirty, stinky, crowded, has long lines, etc. etc. Target isn't that much more expensive either, has better quality products, and is much cleaner. |

Comparing Walmart and Target is like comparing apples and oranges. They're two totally different types of retailers. Walmart was going strong long before Target came into the picture. Walmart is a mass marketing establishment with a wide and varied inventory at excellent prices (lower than Target for the same merchandise). While Target appears to be trying to keep up with Walmart by adding SuperTargets with grocery departments in some locations. I shop at both but Walmart gets the edge because they have a much larger inventory. |
