Which is more powerful? a CEO or the chairman of the board?

astrobuf
In my opinion, the CEO exerts much more power. They control budgets, executive appointments and who works on what on a daily basis. Most Chairmen must work though their board to drive the CEO in one direction or the other. Chairmen can be powerful, but it takes a long time to build a board that will support a Chairman against a competent CEO.

I believe that the Chairman of the Board is more powerful.

Remember that members of the board are representatives
of stockholders. Thus, the Chairman has the trust and
confidence of majority of the stockholders. The board
presided by the Chairman can remove any officer of the
corporation.

Chairman of the Board. But sometimes they are the same person.

Mechard T
A chairman of the board is powerful than a CEO. The reason as to why is powerful emanated from the fact that he is being appointed by the shareholders. He assumes the role of an equity provider/ owner. A CEO is an employee, his role is to execute the technical matters that owners can not manage.

Manoj R
The Chariman of the Board. The CEO of a corporation is appointed by the board and reports to the board.

Note however that the CEO is the poster boy in Corporate America when the going is good and likely to get the boot when the going is bad.
