Taxes
Taxes take a percentage of your payroll, your materials, and your technology.
No matter how you slice it, your #1 expense is taxes.
I am not sure why you did not include that. Perhaps because it is too often lumped in the other expensee.
Labor may or may not be a large expense. You can have a company where the inventory is much more costly than the labor.
Okay, so it will vary with the company. |

It depends on the company. The one where I work, it is material. In a labor intensive operation, it is labor. Sometimes, in a low cost operation, it is advertising. Pharmaceutical companies it is research and development.
The definition is often similar in a certain industry. |

In most companies, payroll will always be the highest expense |

It really depends on the company and what they produce or sell, but usually the largest company expense is labor/salary for employees. Every company has at least one employee, and the vast majority of companies have many employees, so the owner(s) have to pay the employees their hourly wages or salary, and then on top of that they have to pay for medical benefits and retirement, if they offer a retirement or match funds for a 401(k) program or something like that. It gets very costly to pay for employees, so if business is bad the first thing most companies do is start laying people off. |
