Which supermarket do you shop at?
Most people shop at a supermarket because it is local/ nearby.

Does anybody ever get influenced by the supermarkets TV promotions? I wouldn't really go to a supermarket just because they had an excellent promotion on one of the items on my shopping list e.g buy one get one free on ice cream.

I can either choose to go to Tesco or Asda as I live bang in the middle of them. So they are both close.
I can go to either and the only thing that influences my decision on which supermarket I go to is basically if I feel like having a change we will go to the other. (if that makes sense)

You see - I continuously see Morrisions TV Ads and would probably shop their just to check it out but I have never come across any Morrison supermarket at all and I live in Yorkshire.

And I know of:

4 Tesco stores
1 Asda Store
1 Sainsburys
0 Morrisions

which are close by to me!

Tell me your story guys- love to hear bout them :D

Afraid I am not near you. LOL
My wife does most of the shopping. She goes to KROGER, PUBLIX, WAL-MART and SAM's CLUB (division of Walmart) most of the time.

I have been with her a few times over the years. PUBLIX, at least the ones I went in, where ALWAYS clean and had good products that we were interested in. We read labels, and apparently some of their buyers do too. We watch the ingredients in the "foods".

Kroger has fuel centers as well, similar to Sam's clubs, where a membership card gets you discounts on gas (petrol? hehe). 10 cents per gallon at Kroger, not sure about Sams but it is discounted. That helped a lot when it went up to nearly $4.00 per gallon. It is back to $1.45 now. When it was $4.00 here someone told me it was $10.00 in Germany. Yuk!

I always shop at Asda.

I always find them slightly cheaper than Tesco and because I know the layout of the store off the back of my hand I can do my shopping quite quickly!

Tesco is only cheap if you carefully select the right items.
I find I can randomly put things into an Asda basket and it always turns out cheaper than when I randomly put things in a Tesco basket.

In truth I think Tesco were cheaper in around 2001/2002 but since then have slowly got dearer.

misslabeled
I have three major chains nearby that I make the rounds on for good promotions. I consider myself a very informed consumer and I know the average prices of what I like to buy, so I know when a promo is good, and if I can add a coupon, even better. For instance, I like Valley Fresh canned chicken. Sure, there is cheaper, but I like that one. Average price $1.69. Kroger had them on a 10 for $10 promo and I had a coupon for 35 cents off two, and they double coupons. So in the end I bought 10 at an average price of 93 cents per can.

My trips are always planned and I stick to a list. When Albertson's has their BOGO sales, I only go there and buy BOGO items. Recently they had BOGO on Lean Cuisine (my lunch). They were the average price and not the sale price I usually buy at, but the end price was less than my sale price with a coupon. They also have the 24oz 6-pk Pepsi on sale 5 for $10 frequently, which is the only time I buy it, and my impetus for going half the time. The Tom Thumb stores are COMPLETELY overpriced, but they have a buy 3 get 3 free deal with their 2-litre Pepsi. Their average price is a ridiculous $1.89 and I never pay more than $1, but on this deal the average price is 95 cents.

All my stores are close to one another so it's not like a spend my savings in gas, something else I watch out for doing.

I bet the corporations hate people like me. :)

~~The only supermarket I shop at is Vons. I have one around the corner from my home, but I drive to one on the east side of town, because they carry more fresh food (I could from scratch and don't buy premade things), and because the customer service is 100 times better.~~

I shop at a little grocery store called Town and Country. I love it, it's like a family owned store. It's great!

supertarget used to shop at publix

real
In the Miami area there are only two supermarket chains, Publix, and Winn-Dixie. Publix is very dominant. I am accustomed to only shopping there; I have had problems with Winn Dixie quality (but I use their liquor store occasionally).

Prices are extremely high, outrageously so. They are not driven by supply and demand, but whatever Publix thinks it can get away with. But by watching other customers on checkout, I know I am a better shopper.

1. Buy the staples you need when they are on sale. That means stocking up when you have the chance.
Examples are cheese, and bread, which must be bought on sale in quantity.
2. Buy only things you always use on sale; do not be governed by flyers or ads.
3. Avoid the middle aisles loaded with processed junk. But you knew that, right?
4. A favorite Publix trick: items in a group are put on sale, but the most popular item in the group is left out of the sale. They repeat this over and over again.
5. False sales: Items consisting mainly of sugar, white flour, and cheap cooking oil are the most profitable items in the store. These items cost producers 25-50 cents per pound, but are fashioned into "food" selling for $3-$4 a pound. This the heart of the bad American diet. Especially watch out for sweet cereals in brightly colored boxes, and Campbell's soup. If you must buy these, only at half price!! Scan above and below the midsection of the shelves for better buys and healthier foods.
