There are many many lesser known financial consultants working for the very rich. You will not hear about them on CNBC. |

I wouldn't say that any of those companies are any better or worse. It all depends on the consultant your actually seeing.
One good judge of their compentency is whether they have a CFP or CFA. Also, make sure the consultant has been in business for a while. The turn over at the wirehouses is HUGE!
Finally, if you don't have at least $100k then you won't have much luck finding a good advisor to work with you at a wirehouse. Those guys get paid mainly on how much assets they can gather.
If you don't have a lot of assets then you'd be better off paying someone by the hour from the Garret Planning Network. No I am not affiliated with them.
Also, I believe Smith Barney is the only company that still uses the term "Financial Consultant". Most of the other wirehouses tend to use the term "Financial Advisor". |

I noticed that there was some confusion among the answers regarding the term Financial Consultant and Financial Advisor, be careful because often times a stock-broker puts that on this business card because he cannot put other titles on his card, and advisor sounds "so impressive" however it is a legal term in the industry and has requirements. Also if you're looking for a Financial Consultant, ask yourself do you need advice(single-time) or an advisor (helps you plan, implement, and manage your decisions with the end result before laid out before you that spans several years,includes transfer of wealth, tax strategies, even asset protection.) Go to the insurance companies, or perhaps a Financial Planning firm. Look for an RFP if you want to get to the best of the best, This is a Registry Financial Planner, and they have higher standards and requirements than CFPs do and lets just remember one thing also, a a 20 or 25-yr CLU can probably be just as helpful. CFPs were created so StockBrokers could sell insurance so they wouldn't get fired for having such small commissions at the end of the week and the sales managers needed their desk space to put someone else in to do the job. |
