Everyone says they hate Wal-Mart but they sure have no problem being able to get most of their household consumables under one roof. It is basically a very large convenience store - easy to get some groceries, those hair care and facial products as well as a towel, light bulb, toy or even underwear.
I'm not really sure what the problem is. In the early 1900's, Sears began their catalog service, which put stress on the local stores of the time. Then grocery store chains put the Mom & Pop groceries out of business. Then the malls were server competition for downtown shopping areas. Then Wal-Mart began to compete with the grocery stores and the malls.
Wal-Mart provides MILLIONS of people, especially smaller urban areas and towns, far more selection of products -- at a far lower price -- than they ever had access to before. And, as much as people deride their employee practices, the individuals who were working in the mom & pop or regional store didn't have access to the benefits packages offered by Wal-Mart today. You wouldn't see so many 15 or 20 year service badges, if this weren't the case.
Its a free country. No one if forcing anyone to shop at Wal-Mart and no one is forcing anyone to work there either. Vote with your feet and your money if you think different.
One other note: we have two competing food chains in our town. Neither one offers either the selection, quantity or prices of fresh produce that the Super WalMart offers. They simply have a bigger network and access to far more products. To be fair, they often don't carry specialty items - but that's what specialty shops are for. |

I DETEST the place... On two separate occasions, I have been leaving with merchandise I paid for and had the alarm go off... Both times, I was treated like a criminal. My purchases were searched and I was required to produce my receipt. Part of this IS my own fault. I acted like a good little SHEEP and did what I was told.
While I will still occasionally shop there, I have taken 95% of my business elsewhere. The last time I set off the alarm, I didn't stop and have decided NOT to in the future. I have nothing to fear since I'm not stealing, merely leaving with my paid purchases. If Walmart needs to train their employees better, or get better scanners, then they should, but I'm not catering to THEIR ineptitude any longer... At worst, the police will be called... I'd LOVE to see them attempt to detain me while awaiting the police though... |

As a shopper I LOVE IT specially the superstore 24 hours (Like Dulcie said it's Disney land for me when I was a college student), but if I am a competitor I will l hate it, maybe as an employee I will also hate it (thank god I'm not)
Many of you may hate it, but to refine your perspective, read the fortune 500 magazine, it is on No.1!!! in sale revenue, even better than Exxon, BP, and other Oil and Gas Companies.
So what does that teach you? Low Wages (which many Americans will still take for a living), massive number of outlets, Competitive pricing, State of the art Distribution and Procurement system, will put you on the TOP. |

I don't like Wal Mart's, but of course I have to shop there. Why? Because I live in a small town and Wal Mart's is the only place to shop really. The thing I don't like about Wal Mart's is that it typically eliminates competitors. Of course, that is how business works, but having a variety of businesses is important to me. I don't like the fact that Wal Mart's has the monopoly. Competition is good for consumers because there is always the chance for getting an item cheaper because of the rivalry. |

You can love it or hate it...but you know there is a serious problem with the way you do things when the government has to step in and mandate that you change your health benefits policy because you are discovered to be a primary cause of a severely overburdened government assisted health system. |
