Ray Kroc, 1902-1984, founder of the McDonald's Corporation.
Kroc was enjoying moderate success selling milkshake mixers in the early 50's when he noticed that a small restaurant in San Bernardino, California was buying a disproportionately large number of mixers. He met with the owners, Dick and Mac McDonald, and was so impressed with their idea of fast service that he convinced them to let him franchise it.
He bought out the McDonald brothers in 1961 and started expanding the company. He was obsessive about standardization - he wanted the customers to know that the hamburger they got in California would taste just like the one they got in New York. He also believed advertising was sacred to the success of a business.
"I have always believed that each man makes his own happiness and is responsible for his own problems." Ray Kroc, 1977. |

It has to be Mr.Gates, because his original product wasn't even very good, but he didn't let that hold him back! DOS was originally "QDOS" (for 'quick & dirty operating system" and was not intended for consumers until it had been "tidied up". But Mr.Gates saw the competition in his rear-view mirror and had the smarts to go forwards anyway.
Pure entrepreneurism at its best!
(Onassis & Rockerfeller were surely very, very rich, but neither were really "entrepreneurs" now, were they?) |

Michael Dell...This was a kid at University of Texas that started building computers in his dorm room as a Freshman. He would buy cheap parts wholesale and sell the computers after he put them together. When his parents would visit him in his dorm he would hide all the PC stuff in his shower so they wouldn't get upset. Shortly after that he started Dell ..Great story! |

Samuel Walton.....born in 1918... had a dream of creating a workplace for low wage workers to establish a better lifestyle at low costs. He created the first Ben Franklin 5&dime stores....and of course WAL-MART, SAMS CLUB. Sam Walton was awarded the Medal of Freedom before his death in 1992.
"We're all working together; that's the secret. And we'll lower the cost of living foreveryone, not just in America, but we'll give the world an opportunity to see what it's like to save and have a better lifestyle, a better life for all. We're proud of what we've accomplished; we've just begun"
- Samuel Walton
