I would say private sector employees work far more hours every week. The working hours in US government is regulated and documented and paid in 1-1/2 pay if overtime, and double pay if beyond. In private sector, once you reached managerial level, it is mandatory to put in extra hours to get work done. Even regular level employees experienced long working hours.
My friend who works in one the top insurance companies in the country is mandatory to work extra hours to meet deadlines. She has been putting in 70-80 hr week (Mon - Sunday).

Private sectors..
US government positions usually have a very strong union to avoid abuse

Being a private sector self emplyed person and knowing all forms, state and federal employees, I wouls say I work 60 hours per week at the minimum which is more than the other two.

It depends on what you call meaningful work. Government employees sure do make a lot of paperwork that can be recycled into logs for the fireplace in the cold months...............Now, that's what I call meaningful work!

Private sector definitely. US Government employees have people who do a lot of work for them so they can play golf and look all important with their fancy cars and personal escorts and their fast talking political mumbo jumbo.

Obviously it depends on the positions held. After all, congress works only about 3 days a week.
You have to factor in all the part-time jobs in the private sector.
It's unlikely such a study has ever been done, nor would it be worthwhile.

It depends on the job. Some government jobs are 40 hours a week only. Some private sector jobs, especially salary may work a lot more. It is a job my job situation.
