michigander | Why are American manufacturing jobs being outsourced? |
More and more jobs are being lost.Business's downsizing and gov't allowing outsourcing to other countries. Is this a plot to weaken the middle class? |

Because the American society is better off paying someone else less to do the jobs that would cost more to do here. We focus on more service jobs, and these won't be outsourced. |

Corporations llok for economies of scale and locations of scale. What this means is that as goods are produced repetivatley, they cost less money because workers learn what they are doing, the process becomes more efficient, and certain locations are cheaper than others.
American corporations engaged as multi national enterprises look for the cheapest locations with cheap raw materials, workers, etc.
So, to sum it up, corporations look to maximize shareholder equity, and that means making a profit which means spending less oney and paying less to workers. Thus, companies outsource so they can find cheaper labor and cheaper resoucres, which allows them to increase SE.
Also, yes, there is a push to eliminate the middle class. the guest worker program allows cheap labor in the u.s. [corporations do not have to pay immigrants minimum wage]. |

yah, i guess. it is cheaper to manufacture stuff in Mexico, China, etc. because the people there only make 5 dollars a day vs. here where its 5 dollars an hour. |

If you don't want jobs to be outsourced I suggest you to write to your Congressman to write a Bill to lower the Minimum Wage from $5.15 to $2.57
That will reduce outsourcing but it won't stop it.
In Mexico the Minimum Wage is $5.15 USD PER DAY! |

Nope - there is no plot, and there is no conpsiracy.
Capalism is awesome, is great, and its the only answer to the world's problems - however, the downside is that you can undercut workers by offering cheaper products at cheaper prices. Thats the whole idea of capalism.
Its something that only the consumer can help, or prevent, and thats by only buying American made products. |

high labor costs in america. |

Because other countries do not have strict labor laws or union pay scales that cost corporations more money. By going overseas, they can cut labor costs and not have to adhere to environmental and other government regulations. They don't have to pay mandated social security taxes and other fees, and the cost of making a product goes down. Things made in America cost more money, and often people are not willing to pay the extra costs associated with that. |

US consumers won't pay the premium to purchase domestic products and services. |

The most obvious reason for outsourcing of manufacturing jobs is the reduction in labor cost. This allows consumers to purchase lower priced products due to reduced labor costs. However, all manufacturing jobs are not being lost to outsourcing. American manufacturing jobs are often reduced as a result of our own improved efficiency. If a company can automate a manufacturing process or reduce the needed labor to a minimum, there is little difference in the cost to produce a product. Secondly, we now live in what has become a global economy. Since other countries are developing, the need for manufactured goods has increased overseas. American companies want to be there to capitalize on overseas development. This means that a lot of the goods being produced are not making it back to the US, but being sold in the foreign markets where they are produced. To answer your question, it is not a plot against the middle class, but a consequence of developing countries and a global economy. If people did not care to pay more for an American made product rather than base decisions on price and quality the problem would be reduced, but problems would arise with the US products not being competitive on the global market. Just look at the automotive market, foreign automakers are thriving in the US with the products that are being produced in the US, while American automakers are struggling building cars that contain mainly Mexican, Canadian, and Chinese parts. So, maybe part of it is the fact that American companies are now being forced to manage themselves better, where before the competition of foreign manufacturers was not there. Now all the flaws are exposed and American companies are struggling to keep up. |
