AIG had received support from the Government and not many people know what they do they are an investing company. I know that they are a main Sponsor of Formula 1. But the companies investors had made very poor investments and well Investment companies have a default Swap. When they hit a break point for pulling out funds but its not insurance?
It was 85, not 58; and they are smart - they took the american people on a ride while they made a fortune on credit defaults. Creating the swaps and moving around legalities was their brilliance in the first place. It was Congress who never regulated it all mainly because Congress is full of idiots who do not understand basic finance.

if they were to stop backing their services from going under, there would be a lot of damage to its users, they would be left uninsured, or the individual would lose their own investments in the companies. the government is bailing them out so services can still be provided. if they go under it affects a lot more than just themselves.
