Because Canada don't have lot of jobs for people with a PHD. And from what I have heard people who drive taxi's in NYC, toranto make lot of money. Just Imagine every 15 min you get a customer who is going to pay you atleast 10 bucks for 3 blocks ride. |

In the Washington DC area, I've met cab drivers with PhDs --- but they are most often immigrants (as majority of cab drivers are).
They may have achieved academic distinction in their countries, but the reality is that when you migrate to another country, the new country's standards are often different from your country's standards. Employers do not think that a PhD from Stanford or Harvard is the same as PhD from India or Philippines. It's just the reality for immigrants.
Then they were not able to get good jobs and they make better money by driving a cab. Life can be hard for immigrants, even for legal ones. |

Doesn't PHD stand for Paid Hired Driver???? Is having a good education an asset or handicap in finding meaningful employment. Maybe they personally chose to do that line of work. |

Academic intelligence is different from social intelligence.
People with Ph'D's in certain fields find this out the hard way.
Another way to look at intelligence is by examining a persons results in terms of their goals.
In this case, these taxi drivers may be the most fulfilled people in Canada and therefore very intelligent. |

I think maybe because they got their degree from another country. I know many people who went through 7 to 10 years of college or university in another country, then after coming to North America, they either had to do a few more years of school or had to do some sort of test. It's sad, because a lot of them don't get accepted in the field they studied. I don't think it's fair. |

Just because you have a "PHD" doesn't mean it's easier in getting a job. A person with a "PHD" may get paid better and receive more and/or better benefits once they get work, but it can be just as hard as the average layman to find work. The lack of employment has affected many people. It should say something when people with degrees can't even get work...and it's been like that for awhile. I'm sure people with "PH D's" would rather be working in a job they went to school for than drive a taxi or wait on tables... It is not just Canada that has this problem. I personally think it's time for the government to wake up and do something about the lack of jobs...for everyone! |
