Why are US companies putting their customer support in India when most Americans can't understand a da mn thin
I know its cheap labor but surely this is also hurting companies. I'll bet some high level exec is boasting that customer support calls are down and sighting better quality products when in fact, people don't bother calling customer support now.

The original Americans had the idea that we as a nation should boycott goods or products that weren't made in the United States. This should extend to companies which hand out service contracts outside the United States. The biggest problem to this approach is that the original American their culture and subsequently their power has been severely diluted by foreign emigration. Don't get me wrong I have no objections to allowing people from other countries to enter America and share in the American dream, but those people also need to embrace the ideas and freedoms that will keep America the country it has been for several decades.

And when companies sell short the American people and give their jobs away they should be locked out of the American economy.

I agree that it is a bad idea but the companies in India are marketing themselves aggressively to these corporations and are making the deals quite sweet.

There are stateside companies and depressed areas where call centers could be located to improve the local economy and bring jobs back to the states. Companies are short sighted in looking east. They are depleting their customer base as well as the front line.

America shot itself in the foot with this one. In our arrogance, we "demanded" that everyone in the world speak English, instead of encouraging a multi-lingual America. Well, now that almost every country in the world speaks English, Corporations have discovered that it is "cheaper" to speak English in India and elsewhere than it is in America.

My experience in calling international call centers is that while the command of King's English, is excellent, their understanding of colloquialisms and slang, sometimes make the conversation awkward.

Heh yeah my husband called Circuit City help the other day and as soon as the guy from India answered he hung up and looked for the direct number to the store.

One issue is that many times solving your issue is way more important to you than it is to the company. Truthfully, people are so price driven that even a bad call center won't likely change their decision to buy a product or buy it again given the frequency of needing to call the number is pretty low for the average person.

So I'd argue it often has no impact on companies at all. I'd put this on a par with people who hate Wal-Mart, but shop there as soon as it opens. Low prices matter to people more than going to the old store you know well.

As the cost of losing a customer goes up you will find better call centers (in most cases). But if you are just calling about your $10 CompUsa rebate, expect low-end support- why would you expect anything else? If you are willing to pay more for support, they wouldn't outsource it.

Now to the issue of not understanding them. I couldn't disagree more. Some do have accents, but most are very easy to understand and very polite (unlike a lot of Americans unfortunately). I've spoken to many US-based call centers where I had people with far worse diction and far less education. I'd take an Indian accent from a polite, educated person anyday.

Unless you are willing to pay $3000 for a personal computer like in the beginning of the IBM PC days, that's the price we pay for cheap goods.

Oh it's basically Monkey see Monkey do for these big business people. Your is it is cheap labor and all about the almighty dollar. They send tech support overseas to some unkown land, give them a script to read, a basic step by step manuel, and leave them to their own devices. Then they wonder way people get so pissed off when the call the coporate offices!! I love every race, creed, and color that the almighty has created but if there was any way to create a racist heart in someone Big Business has figured it out!

this is true, what you complain about. However, the American wages have out striped the value of the product. Who do you know that will sit in a customer service center for 5.35 and hour and what do you think that I pod would cost your or this computer you are on, or the other products that have become a way of life in America would cost you, if you had to pay your support personal 10.00 hour....this is the very problem we are having with the illegal situation in this country or any country for that matter.

To keep the life style we are accustomed to it takes cheap labor, and when someone in India is paid 1 tenth the cost in America you can understand.

The question is this: what is the savings per corporation that does this....AND ARE THEY PASSING THAT savings on to us.

I don't agree with this policy at all, and think that it does save the company monies but that the stock holders and exec are pocketing the profits.

It will come back to bite us in the fanny as the tech moves out and we then have NO jobs...but Americans are not willing to work for less than the going pay. I am included in this, I am sorry to say....as Alan Greenspan said 4-5 years ago, unless we get this inflated wages under control, we will be in grave danger of a complete economical crash. (so now the man that ran the American economy for all those years, is now working for the G8 in some far and distant lands)
