Why are companies making us pay more for health insurance? And not giving us raises to offset the increase?

With insurance increasing 15 to 20% per year, the company has several options. They can try to absorb the increases by reducing profits or increasing their prices. In this economy, that is difficult to impossible. They can decrease coverages, increase deductibles, or any other changes that might reduce the price. Many companies are just cancelling the insurance all together. A lot of employees do not want to do that. The other thing that they can do is increase the amount the employee pays. Giving you a raise to pay the insurance does not help the problem at all. It just changes where they pay the costs. That is why this issue is as big of a campaign issue as it is.

welcome to my world.

we need cost of living adjustments (COLA), like every 6 months.

Can u imagine what the high gas prices is doing to my budget?

Another reason health insurance is so expensive is because of all the high tech advances in diagnosing available today. It's become fairly routine to do CT scans and MRI's. In the past, just x-rays were the norm. Medicine has come a long way in being able to heal but the advances and new technology are expensive.

People have come to expect every possible test to be run on them and doctors prescribe them to protect themselves from lawsuits. People go to their primary care doctor who sends them to a specialist who sends them to another specialist.

The insurance premium your employer charges you is only a portion of the total cost. That's why if you ever leave a job and go on Cobra, your insurance costs more. Now you're paying your portion plus the part your employer paid.

Business owners and HR departments generally work hard to find a plan each year at renewal time that gives their employees decent coverage and keeps the costs down. Unfortunately, increases are beyond their control. If a lot of employees in a company have huge catastrophic happenings during the year, the costs will go up for everyone. Owners try to absorb as much of the increases as they can.

Group coverage through work has an advantage over individual coverage. Group plans will take you no matter what pre-existing conditions you have. Companies offering private coverage can and will decline your application if you have certain health problems or at the very least, they won't cover medical expenses related to those conditions.

Teaching employees how to take better care of themselves through diet, exercise and lifestyle can go a long way towards helping control insurance costs. I wish insurance companies would do more focus on preventative medicine.

Health insurance costs go up because there are more and more cases of high cost illnesses, ie: cancer. Rate increases are based on the yearly claims payout an insurance carrier has to pay. An employer will pass the increase on to the employee and try not to decrease the benefits, decrease the benefits with no extra cost to the employee, or both. Typically, an employer will split the increase with the employee. If your employer were to discontinue benefits and left you on your own to acquire coverage you would realize the benefits of having a group policy. Individual coverage is twice as much with less benefits, especially on the prescription and hospital end.

Some employers have no choice...it's either defray the increase to the employee or discontinue benefits.

welcome to the new age of business, now bend over!

Because your position is replaceable, it can be outsourced or given to somebody who will work for less, you need to find skill sets that nobody else has.........this isnt the 90's anymore

First of all you have to understand that the employer does not even have to provide employee benefits.

Employers have been squeezed by large annual rate increases for health insurance. These rate increases, on the order of 15% to 20%, are not just one time events. Your employer is likely paying more than double the premium that he/she was paying only 5 years ago. At some point the employer is going to pass on some of the increased cost to the employee.

Most employers consider insurance as part of the total compensation package. Even though your bottom line insurance expense is higher, the company is still paying more. The cost of insurance has to be looked into. I worked for a company that had a 54% increase in one year. 53% was an geographic increase. Meaning our rate went up because of where we were located. Thats something that should not be legal.

The increase in healthcare costs is mostly due to lawsuits against doctors... often frivolous.

Your employer is already paying hundreds of dollars a month for you... and they are not making more profit to offset their part of the expense, so they are passing it on to you.

Runitlk,

health insurance goes up because people use it and because people insist on doing harm to them selfs .
Now if the biz really want to do it right they would 'give' u the costs and let u find ur own insurance. good luck.
your company pays more of the insurance costs than u do. be thankful u have insurance.

Because you smoke, drink alcohol, eat at McDonald's and do not exercise.

There is unemployment in the United States of America.
