It is so that when all you need is milk, you walk past a zillion other products and increase your chances of spending more.

Actually, there that way for a reason, your right, theres actually whole courses you can take about this topic. but, this is the basics
1. they put the milk in the back so people go through the store, helping to raise the chances of them buying something else.
2. they put the fruits and vegs near the front because it has been proven to raise a more of a "happy" atmosphere, due to color and smell.
3. kid stuff=kart height, adult interest goods (food, other) higher up, and the bottom is usually aimed at kids or second brand.
4. Color and music! the colors and the type of music have been proven to help people want to stay in there longer. think soothing/relaxing.
hope this helps.

IT'S ALL ABOUT MARKETING...THEY HAVE PHYSIOLOGIST PUT THEIR INPUT, THEY WANT PEOPLE TO BUY STUFF AND HAVE TO WALK ALL THE WAY IN THE BACK OF THE STORE TO BUY DAIRY PRODUCTS SO YOU CAN BUY OTHER THINGS ON THE WAY

melodi
Grocery stores are designed so that you shop the whole store as putting bread on one side of the store and dairy on the opposite. Vendors pay extra for prime shelf space so items at eye level are paid extra for by a vendor. Candy is at register directly at eye level for a child in a cart seat. Lots of tricks to the trade.

from a report i heard about several months back (i think it was cnn), the reason behind the supermarket design is to keep the customer in the store longer. all the items you need are placed all over the store. it was also noted that all fresh, whole foods are on the outside of the aisles, while all the processed foods are in the inside of the aisles.

Stores are carefully designed to get you to walk all the way through the store, so that you will buy things you didn't come in to buy.

grocery stores are designed to make you pass the most stuff to get to the stuff you buy most often. the more stuff you pass the greater chance you'll 'impulse buy' something. the shelves are designed so the products that are the most profitable are at eye or shoulder level.

I worked for woolworths and they told us they are set up so when u walk in you see the fresh fruit, veges, fresh baked goods and meats so you stay in the store, so they put all the cleaning, bathroom supplies etc at the back coz its the most unappealing stuff. They also put milk and other popular goods at the back of the store so u walk past all of the other goods and impulse buy, same as chocolates and lollies at the counter. They are very smart

well they put the milk and drinks and stuff in the back so 1. it's the last thing you get and it won't spoil and 2. if you go in there just for milk, you have to pass everything else to get there, and you'll probably leave with a few more things.

the whole set-up is a marketing technique because say you want some steak, you're gonna pass the veggies, and you might want some fresh pepper, or oh! look! lettuce! let's have a salad, too!!
see?

Happy- Go
I like the old fashion way everything in isles and squared. Now they have isles in angles and I feel like I am walking in circles !!!!

Naz
its all marketing.
yes fruit and veg first and then milk on one side of the store and the bread on the other side of the store. these are the main essentials.

by the time you bought all three you would have traversed mose of the store and hopefully some of the promotions have grabbed your eyes.

T M
there is some variety of design, but the most common element is to have staples such as bread and milk far from the entrance so during your long trek you might also pick up other items you hadn't originally planned on purchasing.

It is designed to get you to spend money. And yes it is on purpose.

Me being Me
It's a psychological thing. I've heard ppl talk about it before. They put all the stuff you need like fruits veggies meats juices on the outsides and all the stuff you don't really need in the middle as a distraction. And usually the stuff infront of the aisles are distractions too because they're usually on sale or something like that. If you think about it, you can do a healthy grocery if without going through the aisles....you can just walk around them.

Have you ever noticed how milk and bread are near the back, so you have to walk by all the other things before you even get to them? That's how they get you. You come in to buy milk and come out with an icee, cereal, a bunch of bananas, the newest magazine, toilet paper, and a package of english muffins.

I am not sure about grocery stores, but though out high school I worked for KMart. When the remodeled the store I was working at they moved many departments. They moved these departments to create the "mens isle". Sporting goods, electronics, hardware, and automotive moved the the very back of the store. The reason for this was to get men to travel through out the entire store. It is a proven fact (and no I am not trying to be sexist here) most men go in and get what they want then leave. The idea was that if I had to walk to the back of the store to get the oil to change my car, I might see something else along the way and put it in my shopping cart too.

Taco Bell (and most all stores) use color schemes to their advantage. Purple is said to push customers out of the store, this creates a faster turn over and allows tables to be used more effeciently. It is the same concept where resturants keep tempatures lower than one may like.

To put it simply stores pay people millions of dollars a year to try and come up with designs to increase profit.

There was a documentary on The History Channel that really went into this.
I use to work at a grocery, so I found it very interesting.
Oh course almost every little detail has been studies and tweaked to increase sales.
For a typical grocery, it's really quite fascinating what they do.

do you have a better idea

They want you to circle the store for all the good, unpackaged stuffs. The aisles in the middle are mostly junk and packaged things...blah.

Sarah
It's probably the easiest putting the fresh food with other fresh food, frozen food with frozen food and so on

They are from the ancient tribe of Ya kuzi from japan.. they were created for the emperors there. Only he can wear the grocery bags

Kristin A
basics are located around the edge of the store for ease... just running in fast to get things.

the rest has no rhyme or reason, but cheaper items are always located on top shelves or bottom. the most expensive products are eye level. .. so look around!

Rob
To save room for the candy.
