Why are projects always over budget?

AHA! Finally a question with some merit (vs. who is hotter - so-and-so or whazzizname?)

Well, generally companies bid for the project or job at hand. And, one company or contracter is always trying to underbid the others - so what happens is, the winning bid is usually lower than the possible cost of doing the job. So, when the first glitch happens (and it inevitably does), the costs soar.

Sometimes these low bidders try and avoid using union labor, which shoots them in the foot, or try and use substandard materials, which also causes a problem. Then weather, job actions and other factors play into how long something will take.

So, if you get a bid for a job -- any job -- add about 25% to the bottom line.

Because everyone always underestimates the following:
1. Graft
2. Political Considerations
3. The difference from when a job is bid to completion the price for labor and materials will go up
4. They are trying to under-bid their opponents to get the contracts. . .

lack of planning materials prices spike up , weather , loss of key personnel , etcetcetc

only then they can have a higher budget sanction for the next budget period :)))

Because customers do not know what they want and services providers cannot read the client's mind. that is why is very important to clearly articulate the project daily and weekly plan. And if there is any lag, use extra resource immediately to catch up.

Because people either underestimate the true costs or unforseen expenses come up.
